Minerals For Development
On 18th March 2025, the African Minerals and Geosciences Centre (AMGC) received Ms. Rose Masaka from Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC). Ms. Rose has visited the Centre for the purpose of preparing a Television (TV) programs on the mineral services and products of the Centre. These television programs will cover the role of Simple Ceramic Technology for the cottage industry and youth and female empowerment for irradication of poverty and raise the level of standards of living in sustainable development. This first program will be at the Industrial Minerals Application Department (IMAD) of AMGC. Apart from that, a second TV program will be recorded on Semiprecious Gemstones Value Addition aiming to establish more cottage industry for youth and female empowerment, creation of jobs for sustainable development. Other TV program which will be recorded will include Mineral Processing and Small Scale Department (MPSSMD) for the purpose of capacity building to small scale mining on the best mineral processing technology in order to attain high recovery during mineral processing. The Director General of AMGC appreciated the visit paid Ms Rose and said a word of welcome TBC to the Centre promised to continue with the previous cooperation between AMGC and TBC because most of the past AMGC event has been recorded and broadcasting by TBC. Recording these TV programs are scheduled to start on Tuesday 25th March 2025 at 10:00hrs in AMGC premise in Kunduchi area, Dar es Salaam.
On 11th March, 2025, the African Minerals and Geosciences Centre (AMGC), an ISO 9001:2015 Certified has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with ICON Industrial Services (U) LTD from Uganda, the member state of the Centre. ICON is a Ugandan oil and gas service company established in 2012 to carry out array of core analysis related services. This event has been graced by the AMGC Board Member from Tanzania, Mr. Terence Thomas Ngole and the Director General of AMGC, Mr. Ibrahim Shaddad and witnessed by AMGC Quality Manager and Manager of Chemical and Environmental Department, Mr. Charles Buteta Athuman. The scopes of this cooperation include working together as sister laboratories in the area of analytical work and ensuring capacity building between the two parties.

On November 29, 2024, the African Minerals and Geosciences Centre (AMGC), an ISO 9001:2015 certified received a team of two lecturers from the University of Dodoma (UDOM), College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences. The team included 1. Dr. Mtabazi Sahihi, HoD, Chemistry Department 2. Dr. Benatus Mvile, Coordinator of Higher Education for Economic Transformation (HEET) Project The aim of the visit was to familiarize with activities of the Centre and discuss the collaboration between UDOM and AMGC, especially in the areas of training for capacity building, research, and consultancy.
OnDecember 23, 2024, the African Minerals And Geosciences Centre (AMGC), an ISO 9001:2015 certified has received three mining engineers from Ariab Mining Company (AMC) in Sudan. The engineers include; 1. Mr. Jamal Hassan Ali Abaker 2. Mr. Abdallah Haroon Ahmed Mahmud 3. Mr. Bushra Abdelmahmoud Mohammed Abdelmajied The engineers will be attending a two-week training course on Mineral Economics and Strategy. The course will be conducted by Mineral Proceesing and Small Scale Mining Department of the Centre from 23 December 2024 to 03 January 2025.
On December 10, 2024, the African Minerals and Geosciences Centre (AMGC), an ISO 9001:2015 Certified, received a team of two technical personnel from WIRSAM SOUTH AFRICA namely; 1. Eng. Manuel Grobbelaar - Service Engineer/Specialist on Tescan Electron Micrscopes. 2. Ms. Lize-Meri Prinsloo - Personal Assistant to Eng. Grobbelaar. The team came to provide technical service to the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) machine in the Analytical Fingerprint Laboratory (AFP).
Mr. Ibrahim Shaddad, the Director General of the African Minerals and Geosciences Centre (AMGC), paid this morning, 18 December 2024, a work visit to H.E. Hassan Ali Joho, the Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs of Kenya, the current Chairman of AMGC Governing Council. The meeting was attended by Mr. Elijah Mwangi, the Principal Secretary of State Department for Mining at the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, Kenya, who is a distinguished member of AMGC Standing Committee for Officials.
Pursue to a courtesy visit paid by Mr. Ibrahim Shaddad, the Director General of the African Minerals and Geosciences Centre (AMGC) to the esteemed Embassy of Republic of the Sudan in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on 26 November 2024, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Abdalla Abd Elhameed, the newly assigned Sudanese Ambassdor in Dar es Salaam paid a familiarization visit to AMGC on November 11, 2024.
The African Minerals & Geosciences Centre (AMGC) was honored by a fimilrization visit from a high level delegation arrived from Nairobi, Kenya to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to attend official opening of Tanzania’s Mining and Investment Conference (TIMC) 2024. The delegation was led by the Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs H.E Hassan Ali Joho in his capacity, the current Chairman of AMGC Governing Council. H.E. Hassan Ali Joho was accompanied by Mr. Elijah Mwangi, the Principal Secretary of State Department for Mining at the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, Kenya, who is a distinguished member of AMGC Standing Committee for Officials.

Research and Development

Applied research and development

In collaboration with academic institutions, geological surveys, scientists and researchers the department will assist and conduct research in geo-information. In this regard, the department will start in 2004 to catalogue all geo-science research and development projects and activities in/of the region and will publish the results on an annual basis for inter-active scientific communication and networking. From 2004, all research and development work of the department will be documented in written reports either for publication or filing.
Constant Scientific Interaction

The establishment of a forum for scientific exchange and interaction among the geo-scientific community of the region is an essential goal of the department in order to enhance AMGC's image as a regional hub for the mineral sector. Such forums will be organised in the form of annual workshops and conferences. Therefore in 2003/2004 the department will introduce this idea among geo-scientific institutions and professional societies in Africa and initiate the first of such forums in 2004. Cross-border studies will be promoted with a view to improving understanding of regional geology and metallurgy in particular.
Information Management

The compilation of regional geo-physical, geo-chemical, geological, environmental and mineral occurrence data for the production of regional thematic maps and reports will continue in the department. A quarterly report on new regional thematic maps and reports available from AMGC will be published from 2004 and will be sent as a service package to the member states.

All the necessary assistance will be provided to the member countries in the process of database upgrading, compilation and regional thematic mapping. The department will widen its scope further to include information about water resources and environment in relation to mineral resources development. Such activities will be reported to the member states in the form of a quarterly Information Letter.

From 2004, the Geo-Information Department will be responsible for the collection and the installation of a regular and updated data bank on all addresses (contact partners, email, phone and surface mail) of relevant regional key public and private sector institutions and industries for the different departments of AMGC.
Regional information centre

Since the main purpose of the establishment of the Geo-Information Department is to provide services to the public as a regional geo-information centre, basic information will be made available at AMGC in the form of regional geo-information and bibliographic databases. Additional information compiled in the department in collaboration with the member states will also be made available for public use.

Acquiring more reference information in hard and soft form will strengthen AMGC's library. Technical reports and maps on geological, geo-physical, geo-chemical and other related surveys are major sources of information to be included in the library. Technical reports and maps have to be acquired from all the countries of the region as much as possible. The applied research and development activities in the department will focus on the development of new information management and publicising systems. The purchase and receipt of new literature and data by AMGC's library will be reported to the member states in the quarterly Information Letter.

The 29th Colloquium of African Geology CAG29

The Colloquium of African Geology (CAG) is a major biennial meeting organized under the auspices of the Geological Society of Africa (GSAF), where earth scientists globally have the opportunities to present their research results on topics related to African geology and surrounding areas. PanAfGeo Photography Competition

PanAfGeo is running a Photography Competition for all participants of the PanAfGeo project.
The theme for your photos is “What PanAfGeo means to you?” and can include entries on how you think PanAfGeo benefits you, your Survey, your Society or your Country. Ten finalists will see their photos printed in high resolution, framed and exhibited during the final meeting of the project in 2024. Winners will be announced during that meeting and on the PanAfGeo website and social media.

Key information:

  • Deadline: 22nd of March 2024
  • The contestants must have been involved in any way in PanAfGeo phase 2, and the photograph must be taken during one of the training packages.
  • Photos should illustrate the best of “what PanAfGeo means to you” and should include a short description of why this was important to you.

Training Courses

African Minerals and Geosciences Centre (AMGC) is pleased to announce the introduction of four new courses on Geostatistics, Petroleum Sciences and Resource Estimation in collaboration with Khartoum based Consulting firm called Knowledge and Training Centre (KTC). The course shall be facilitated by the Director of KTC, Dr. M. Zayed Awad, an eminent specialist in the areas of geostatistics, resource evaluation, stratigraphy, reporting, training and mentoring, risk and decision analysis, petroleum economics, project management. The 39th Governing Council (GC) Meeting of AMGC in Khartoum, Sudan

The 39th meeting of the Governing Council (GC) of the AMGC was held in Khartoum Sudan from 13 to 18 February 2019. The GC is the highest policy organ of AMGC comprising of the Ministers responsible for Mineral Resources of the members countries, meets annually to oversee the activities of the Centre. In its 39th meeting, the GC deliberated on several issues pertaining to the AMGC activities and among them were the approval of its annual budget and the renewal of the contract of the Director General for a second four-year term.

The New Airborne Data of Mozambique

Funded by the World Bank, the Australian Thomson Aviation company was contracted by Mozambican Government to carry out airborne survey (magnetic and radiometric) in the north of Mozambique covering the area shown below.
The survey was carried out between 2014 and 2015 and the data were delivered to the National Directorate of Geology and Mines (DNGM) in binging of 2016.

The delivery data include:
• Magnetic and elevation data in Geosoft GDB format
• Radiometric data in Geosoft GDB format
• A set of grids in Geosoft GRD format
• A set of digital maps in at scale 1:250.000 in JPG format
• A set of digital maps in at scale 1:50.000 in JPG format
• Magnetic and elevation data in Geosoft XYZ format (ASCII)
• Radiometric data in Geosoft XYZ format (ASCII)

The coordinate system of delivered data are in coordinate system UTM37S/WGS84.

Inauguration of Analytical Finger Printing (AFP) Laboratory

The African Minerals and Geosciences Centre (AMGC) in tripartite collaboration with BGR of Germany and International Conference of African Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) inaugurated a sophisticated Hi Tech Analytical Finger Printing (AFP) Laboratory on 8 June 2018 for analysis of 3Ts conflict minerals to enforce the regional certification mechanism and abate illicit minerals trade in the African Great Lakes Region.

Regional and Country Level Training Workshops on Geo-data Digitization and Mapping of Development Minerals

The ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme is a three-year, €13.1 million capacity building program of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States, financed by the European Union and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and implemented by UNDP. The aim of the programme is to promote the sustainable development of industrial minerals, construction materials, dimension stones and semi-precious stones in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific.
The ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme supports the capacity development of key stakeholders in the sector such as regulatory agencies and local governments; private stakeholders including small-scale mining enterprises, construction companies, mining and quarrying associations; as well as training centres, universities, civil society organizations and community groups.

The ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme is implemented at both the regional and country levels. At the regional level, the programme conducts capacity building activities with participants from forty (40) ACP countries (28 in Africa) through regional training workshops, field trips, the production of guidance products and knowledge exchange. At the country level, in depth capacity building is undertaken with six focus countries: Cameroon (Central Africa); Guinea - Conakry (West Africa); Uganda (East Africa); Zambia (Southern Africa); Jamaica (Caribbean); and Fiji (Pacific). Country-level activities include: training; small grants; the production of maps and databases; development of regulations on environment, health and safety; organization of community dialogues, technology fairs and networking events The ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme and the African Minerals and Geosciences Centre (AMGC) signed agreement for AMGC to deliver a series of regional and country level training workshops on geological data digitization techniques, field mapping, resource estimation and database management of Development Minerals.  Through this project AMGC will organize and carry out 10 training workshops for participants from the African ACP countries starting from October 2017 up to June 2018.  Through this programme more than 220 professionals are expected to be trained from 29 African countries.
